Howdy y’all, I’m Connor McCauley.
I used to be a Colorado ski bum, and now I’m married into a fifth-generation Texas ranch. These are our stories.
Let’s jump right in.
Planting Hay — One of the Ranch’s Biggest Jobs
This week, we took on one of the biggest missions on the ranch: planting hay.
Before we could even hit the fields, we had to prep. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, that meant cleaning out all the wheat seed from the planter and swapping in our hay seed—no small task.
Once we got everything ready, we headed to the fields. I followed Sam, who was out front with the plow, turning up the soil to make it fertile. I came in behind him with the planter. Our tractors are equipped with radar-based guidance systems that help us keep our rows straight—not quite autopilot, but a huge help.
And no, it’s not a nap-in-the-cab kind of job. You’ve got to stay focused. You’re constantly scanning for deer sheds, elk sheds, scrap metal, or even just fixing equipment mid-field. It’s a real-deal, hands-on task.
The good news? We knocked it out in two days. Even better—perfect timing on the rain. We planted just after a rainfall and before the next one came through. That moisture helped the hay seed sprout right on schedule. Couldn’t have asked for better timing.
This hay will be what feeds our cows later this year—and we’re excited to see how tall it grows.
You can watch the whole process, from the drone shots to the in-cab perspective, on our YouTube channel. If you haven’t already, please subscribe. Even if you’re not a big YouTuber, this is a great way to support us and follow along.
A Little Side Quest: Chasing Cattle in the Canyon
This week also brought a good ol’ side quest: opening gates across the edge of the canyon by dirt bike.
We had a few cows that hadn’t made their way up from the canyon flats. When that happens, we call in the helicopter. It’s one of the most efficient ways to move cattle up out of rugged country, and it lets us spot any stragglers from above.
I didn’t have the camera with me this time, but I’ve filmed this in past years—it’s wild to see.
And yes, riding a dirt bike for work? Never gets old.
There’s some great footage from this ride in our latest video. It was fast and worth every second.
Why This Matters
Every time you buy from us or support our YouTube channel, you're not just supporting TriTails Beef—you’re backing real ranching families across America.
Ranching is generational. Our land, our cattle, our way of life—it’s been passed down for over a hundred years. And sadly, too many ranchers are being pushed out by middlemen and corporations who don’t care about the land, the animals, or the people.
When you buy directly from a ranch like ours, you’re cutting out the noise. No middleman. No corporate markup. Just beef raised by hardworking people who live this life every day.
So please—share these newsletters. Recommend the videos. Tell your friends. Help us get the next generation interested in what ranching really looks like.
America needs real food, grown the real way. And that’s what we’re here to do.
Thanks again for riding along with us. Thanks to everyone who’s bought from us—you keep this operation alive. Most of our customers say it’s the best beef they’ve ever had. We aim to keep it that way.
Catch y’all next week—we’ll talk about how we spent Memorial Day weekend.
Stay sharp,
Connor
