A Search in the Canyon

On Monday, Sam and I woke up to a phone call about a missing person in the canyon. When situations like this arise, it’s typically all hands on deck—search and rescue teams, the fire department, and local police are all involved. They often call Sam as well, given his deep knowledge of the land and the canyon. If there’s even a chance the person might be on our property, we’re ready to help with the search.

We quickly learned that the person’s car had broken down on the highway running through the canyon, between two neighboring towns. Instead of staying with their vehicle as most would, this individual decided to hike into the canyon. Adding to the intrigue, we discovered they were a former Marine. Sam and I tossed around various theories throughout the day about why they might have chosen to leave the car, but regardless of the reason, we both agreed it wasn’t the safest decision.

The temperatures that night were bitterly cold, dipping well below freezing, so it was clear this person was a tough sucker to endure those conditions. Throughout the morning, helicopters buzzed overhead, and we joined the search, checking areas near the pinged location of their cell phone. Unfortunately, nothing turned up. Later in the day, search dogs picked up a scent, which eventually led back to the highway. Authorities later concluded that the individual had likely walked back to the road and caught a ride, though this remains unconfirmed.

While we don’t have a definitive ending to this story, we’re hopeful that this person made it out safely and is healthy. If nothing else, it serves as a reminder to always stay with your vehicle in these situations and let help come to you.

Life on the Ranch: Inauguration Day Reflections

During Inauguration Day, much of the country experienced a cold spell, and life on the ranch was no exception. For us, that meant breaking through thick layers of ice to keep water available for the cattle. Fortunately, we didn’t have snow to contend with this week, so rolling out hay wasn’t necessary. However, the daily rounds still had to be made. The yearlings, in particular, were eager for their grain snacks at the feeding troughs.

While making rounds, we discovered several bulls had escaped their pasture and wandered into the hayfield. They seemed pretty pleased with their “all-you-can-eat buffet,” but we knew they needed to be moved back to where they belong. Sam noticed a broken section of fencing that allowed their escape. Later, he and Roger got to work, herding the bulls back to their pasture and repairing the fence to prevent future escapes.

Fun on the Ranch: A Dirt Bike Ride to Remember

The ranch isn’t just a workplace; it’s also a playground. This week, I took my dirt bike out for a ride, and it was an absolute blast! It was a cold morning, but it felt incredible to hit the trails, ride fast, and soak in the beauty of the land.

One of the things I love most about riding is encountering wildlife. This time, I spotted a pack of deer, but my personal favorite is always the aoudad (Barbary sheep). I’m currently working on improving my video skills and fixing a microphone issue so I can share these experiences with you on YouTube. If you’re into dirt bikes or have tips for making better videos, drop a comment—I’d love to connect with others who share this interest!

A Quick Update on These Newsletters

I’m planning to start sending these updates weekly! They may be a bit shorter, but this way, you’ll get more frequent peeks into life on the ranch.

Until next week, take care, and thanks for following along with our journey!
